The performance of these teams influences the overall success of a business. This is the case in both small startups and large multinational organisations.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we\u2019ll look at what makes a high-performing team, as well as explore practical steps your business can take to build high-performing teams.<\/p>\n<h2>The High-Performing Teams Model<\/h2>\n<p>High-performing teams are those that achieve better business results when compared to similar groups.<\/p>\n<p>They generally perform as more than the sum of their parts. Several studies, including those from Google and MIT, suggest that in high-performing teams, the ability or performance of the individuals within the group is of secondary importance to other factors.<\/p>\n<p>Identifying the characteristics of high-performing teams to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dev-inproduct.pantheonsite.io\/en-gb\/productivity-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">improve the productivity<\/a>\u00a0of groups in their organisation is a priority for many managers. Here is a look at what makes a high-performing team.<\/p>\n<h2>Characteristics of High-Performing Teams<\/h2>\n<p>The points below are some of the most important factors that studies have found can impact a team\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>While there are only four categories\u2014communication, composition, having a plan, and psychologically safety\u2014each one includes several points for managers to consider.<\/p>\n<p>For example, communication covers not only encouraging communication but encouraging a specific type of communication. Having a plan includes not only setting goals and measuring them but building a strategy to achieve these goals and clarifying the role of each team member.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-59178\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-inproduct.pantheonsite.io\/uploads\/high-performing-teams-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/products.act.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/high-performing-teams-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/products.act.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/high-performing-teams-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/products.act.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/high-performing-teams-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/products.act.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/high-performing-teams.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>High-Performing Teams are Good Communicators<\/h3>\n<p>In a study that explored why some teams outperformed others,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2012\/04\/the-new-science-of-building-great-teams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">MIT\u2019s Human Dynamics Laboratory<\/a>\u00a0found that the key to high-performance was in the way teams communicate.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the study found that patterns of communication were not only the most important predictor of a team\u2019s success but were as significant as all the other factors the study looked at combined.<\/p>\n<p>These other factors included the intelligence of the individuals in the team, their personality, their skill, and the content of their discussions.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers identified three aspects of communication they found were crucial to team performance. These were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Energy, as measured by the number of and the nature of exchanges between team members. The study found that when it came to building energy, face-to-face communication is most important, followed by video or phone calls. E-mail and texting were the least effective.<\/li>\n<li>Engagement\u00a0is how energy is distributed amongst team members. Teams in which energy is distributed equally throughout all members were more engaged than those in which it was concentrated in a small number.<\/li>\n<li>Exploration\u00a0is the number of outside connections a team has. The study found that high-performing teams had members that frequently engaged with external teams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The question, then, is how to encourage teams to communicate in the way defined above. The study highlighted several actions companies had taken that had produced positive results.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Schedule breaks so teams are off work at the same time. Doing so will encourage communication amongst members.<\/li>\n<li>Experiment with seating arrangements to encourage strangers to sit together and improve exploration. For example, using long tables in areas where employees eat lunch.<\/li>\n<li>Managers can set a personal example by actively seeking out face-to-face communication with team members.<\/li>\n<li>Provide feedback to employees about communicating more effectively. For example, encouraging people to listen when others are talking and minimise interruptions.<\/li>\n<li>If that doesn\u2019t work, switching out team members can improve energy and engagement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>High-Performing Teams Have Optimal Composition<\/h3>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/people-and-organizational-performance\/our-insights\/high-performing-teams-a-timeless-leadership-topic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">McKinsey<\/a>, the size of a team can affect how well it performs.<\/p>\n<p>The consultancy firm found that having fewer than six members in a team could result in poor and slow decision making due to a lack of diversity and bandwidth. On the other hand, a team\u2019s performance begins to worsen once it gets beyond ten members as the larger size encourages sub-teams and divisive behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>McKinsey also suggests that when creating teams, managers should consider whether the skills and attitudes of team members are complementary.<\/p>\n<p>The consultancy firm isn\u2019t the only organisation to cite size as a predictor of the performance of teams.<\/p>\n<p>In a survey of over 100 senior executives from across America,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkwiseinc.com\/impact-of-team-performance-survey-report.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">ThinkWise<\/a>\u00a0found that small teams\u2014 those with<br \/>\nless than ten members\u2014outperformed the average score in all but two of the indicators of high-performance teams.<\/p>\n<p>Medium teams with ten to fifty members outperformed the average score in two categories. Teams with over fifty members outperformed the average in just a single category.<\/p>\n<h3>High-Performing Teams Have a Strategy<\/h3>\n<p>The ThinkWise study also provided an interesting insight into the traits of high-performing teams. The most significant difference in these metrics came in communication, corroborating what MIT found.<\/p>\n<p>However, the second was that high-performing teams keep commitments. This combines with other traits such as having a sense of direction and purpose to suggest that high-performing teams have a clear understanding of objectives and a path to achieving their goals.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/guides\/business\/manage-a-successful-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">New York Times<\/a>\u00a0agrees. In an article, the newspaper singled out, making a plan as one of the top insights for how to lay the groundwork of a highly productive team.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the newspaper pointed to the importance of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Managers taking steps to ensure teams work well together.<\/li>\n<li>Creating a clear map of what a team\u2019s priorities are and how they will be measured.<\/li>\n<li>Setting a clear shared goal for the team that encourages the unit to work together to achieve the goal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Google (more on their study below) also found that structural clarity\u2014defined as clarity of the team\u2019s roles, plans, and goals\u2014was important.<\/p>\n<h3>High-Performing Teams Feel Psychologically Safe<\/h3>\n<p>In 2012,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rework.withgoogle.com\/guides\/understanding-team-effectiveness\/steps\/introduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">Google<\/a> began to study hundreds of teams within the organisation in an attempt to find out why some groups were more successful than others.<\/p>\n<p>After spending years running models to define which traits impacted the effectiveness of a team, it found that the number one metric was psychological safety. This was followed by dependability, structure and clarity, meaning, and impact.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, psychological safety refers to \u201cthe individual\u2019s perception of the consequences of taking an interpersonal risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teams in which members feel psychologically safe are those where the members are confident when it comes to asking questions, making suggestions, or admitting mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of fostering psychological safety, Google pointed to research by Harvard Professor Amy Edmondson, who suggests \u201cFraming work as a learning problem, not an execution problem, acknowledging your own fallibility, and modelling curiosity and asking questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Wrapping Up<\/h2>\n<p>The above four factors are many of the traits high-performing teams display.
